The end of summer makes me long for the beginning of summer.  I haven’t quite switched back to Fall mode, maybe because in Dallas it’s still over 100 degrees.  But the best times to travel to Costa Rica are the winter months when all the snowbirds escape the cold. And a chic hotel on my radar is Hotel Costa Verde, specifically the 727 Fuselage suite.

Yes. You are looking at a plane in a jungle tree top.  It’s a refurbished vintage 1965 727 airframe, perched on a 50-foot pedestal.

The view – voila!

Hotel Costa Verde has bungalows as well as regular style hotel rooms.  What’s the appeal of staying in an airplane, in the jungle? An awesome adventure.  You’re up in the trees (2 bedroom suite) with monkeys and whatever else lives up there.

Hotel Costa Verde is on the outskirts of the Manuel Antonio National Park. It is one of Costa Rica’s famous parks known for its lush rain forests, beautiful beaches and amazing wildlife.

It’s easy to reach by train or by bus from San Jose. The flight takes 20 minutes, the drive 3 1/2 hours or more depending on traffic.

And continuing on with our love of all things Brazilian is CSS, an alternative band from Sao Paulo, Brazil. CSS is refreshingly brash and irreverent, and one of our new favorites. CSS stands for ‘Cansei de Ser Sexy,’ which means ‘Tired of Being Sexy.’ The band sings in English and made their sassy debut with Seattle-based indie label, Sub Pop! Sub Pop!, which also brought alternative band Nirvana to the world has fashioned the band as a bunch of party rockers, and that they are. Rock on!

Interview with Costa Rican designer Sonia Chang

Sonia_diaz_costa_rica_1_2When most of us think of Costa Rica what comes to mind is a tropical paradise- luscious jungles, exotic wildlife and the beautiful beaches on both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. But now, you can add fashion to Costa Rica’s repertoire.

As women in Latin America’s fashion hotspots – Mexico and Brazil have started to carve out their own fashion identity, Costa Rica’s style is also taking the spotlight.

If you’re heading out to Costa Rica for some beach bumming, Spanish language courses or active adventure, you may want to take a little time to explore Costa Rica’s fashion scene and pick up some unique finds. One designer you’ll want to seek out is Sonia Chang.

Inspired by Costa Rica’s colorful tropical palette and unique history, Venezuelan-born Chang is a fashion minimalist who wants her designs to reflect a simple yet elegant style.

"I love to mix fabrics and to combine prints and colors," she says. "I think the elegance of a woman comes with her. She can learn about fashion, but if she doesn’t have that style, elegance and security from inside nothing will work on her."

Chang’s most recent collection combines her country’s pre-Columbian artistic values with Costa Rica’s natural materials. She incorporates resources such as yute, manta, coffee beans and cabuya into her designs.

"I embroidered them with Indian prints, inspired [by] the Guaitil region in the [northwestern part] of the country," she says.

While Chang’s designs reflect love for her country and appreciation for the beauty and artistry of Costa Rica, she draws inspirations from her worldwide travels. From Europe to Asia to other Latin American countries, Chang picks and chooses pieces of her destinations’ culture and history to add an international flair to her collection.

With an office in both Costa Rica and New York, Chang works intimately with her clients to create individual pieces.

"I see [the clients’] personalities, their bodies and what they want, and I give them my ideas and advice about what is good or bad for them."

For a firsthand look at Chang’s collections, visit her website. Chang is currently working on her first catalogue to be distributed internationally.

Lovin this song right now. With the U.S. debt crisis, it seems that’s the politicians’ mottos. Such is life. Classic MJ. Love this video in particular, because it was filmed in Rio.

I guess Big Brother is everywhere now! I really wonder if it’s that necessary. Hmmm.

Google is expanding its Street View service into some of the world’s most remote places.

It will photograph the Amazon and Rio Negro Rivers of northwest Brazil in partnership with charity Foundation for a Sustainable Amazon (FAS).

Google will train local people to collect images, and will leave behind equipment so work continues long-term.

Pictures will be stitched together so users can explore 360-degree panoramics of the area.

FAS approached Google two years ago with the plan to digitize high-quality images from the Amazon basin to demonstrate the effects of poor global sustainability efforts and widespread deforestation on the landscape.

Fashion Chain Zara Acts On Brazil Sweatshop Conditions

Zara-NewYork
This is an interesting article from the BBC on fashion chain Zara. For the life of me, I’m not really sure I can understand any corporate culture that would be ok with things like this. It’s all about the price tag.

I love my fashion, but I know I wouldn’t want to be working in sweatshop conditions. Why do people always make up excuses to treat other people badly? I don’t get it. Besides, I think when people are happy, they are the most productive.

I’m not sure what the world is coming to, but this is pretty pathetic. At least, they are trying to do something about it, but why have sweatshops in the first place?

- Denise

The owners of Spanish fashion chain Zara say they are strengthening the oversight of their production system after workers were found toiling in a Brazilian sweatshop.

A raid in Sao Paulo found mostly Bolivian immigrants working for a pittance in unsafe conditions.

Inditex, the parent company of Zara, said it had zero tolerance for such infringements.

The workers were employed illegally by a subcontractor, Inditex said.

A raid in Sao Paulo found people working in cramped, unsanitary conditions, for long hours.

Electrical wires dangled dangerously from the walls above piles of fabric, says the BBC’s Paulo Cabral, who accompanied officials on their raid.

The people were being paid between 12 and 20 cents a piece – the equivalent of 7-12 US cents (4p-7p), Brazilian media reported.

How To Make A Caipirinha – Brazil’s Sumptuous National Cocktail

Caipirinha
So I spent this weekend partying away – as host of a fun event, celebrating the launch of the Zaji Girl Fashion Guide inspired by beautiful and sexy Rio. We had the event in a cute little boutique in Dallas’ Bishop Arts District called ONLi.  With bright orange walls and beautiful art by local designers, ONLi is a great place to get unique clothes by local fashion designers. I LOVED the assymetrical skirts and had to pick one up before I left. The Bishop Arts District has this East Coast vibe that’s cozy and cool without trying too hard.

Decided that our drink of the evening was going to be the Caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail. It’s most similar to a mojito but can be made with lots of other tropical fruits.  It’s super easy to make. Ingredients: Cachaca (Brazilian rum) +granulated sugar + limes – that’s the traditional way. If you want to substitute the limes, you can pick your fruit – strawberries, watermelon..you name it. A cheap but very good Cachaca is 51. Delish!

A couple of weekends ago I had the delirious pleasure of heading to California for a well-needed chill out weekend. Spent Saturday sailing with friends and family in San Diego’s bay. It was a perfect sunny California day.

As always, in prepping for the trip had to check out some cute travel accessories. I’m diggin’ Australian eco-chic line Apple and Bee. They have travel bags, cosmetic bags, kids toy bags that are environmentally friendly and price-friendly too.
